Week 5 Post 1

Subway and Hungry Bear Deli are two sandwich shops located in San Diego.  Subway has over 42,000 franchises worldwide and Hungry Bear Deli is a small business with only one location.  Both websites promote their fresh ingredients however Subway equally promotes value.  Subway even highlights their value pricing of a few subs as their opening visual.  Hungry Bear Deli on the other hand has slick moving visuals with mouth watering photos that invite you to try their large portions, fresh ingredients and high quality subs.  Taste and quality are their focal point compared to Subway’s focus on value and convenience.

Subway’s call to action to order online (order now) for either pick up or delivery is repeated in several places making convenience a draw for their market. Once you scroll down Subway’s home page they use sustainability and farm references to show freshness and nutrition as being important as well.  Hungry Bear Deli doesn’t seem to have convenience being a focus but does list a menu for patrons to view.  Hungry Bear does mention fresh ingredients as well but aside from the photos of the sandwiches themselves, makes no other references to it.

When you click on Subway’s “about us” link, they explain their start as small, perhaps their attempt at being the hometown sandwich shop.  Subway’s social media focus is almost buried at the bottom of the page.  Hungry Bear Deli’s site directs the visitor to their social media links just below the scrolling photos of sandwiches.  Clearly having a social media presence is very important to their business.  They also encourage a review on Yelp.  When you click on their facebook link for example, references to being a small town sandwich shop and grateful to be a part of the community is prevalent.

Subway’s target market is for busy business people or families to have a convenient and fast meal.  They are people who are budget and health conscious.  Their target market has a balanced male/female ratio with a range of ages as well.  Hungry Bear Deli’s target market is primarily men who are not as focused on nutrition.  The draw to social media and their price point of their offerings makes the the age range as early 20s to 40s.

The style of the two sites are very different although both have strong design.  Each site is professional with clear messaging for each.  The use of color that Subway has connotes freshness and sustainability.  Hungry Bear Deli’s site draws in the customer in by appealing to their senses of taste.  To be honest, I’ve got to give Hungry Bear Deli a try.
